APRS with Xastir and APRSIS

If you are interested in setting up your own remote weather station or tracking the movements of your car or even a high altitude weather balloon (that’s ours in the picture above) than APRS is a great way to go. APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) is a system designed to send data across an adhoc network and to the internet via packet radio on amateur frequencies.

Harry Bloomburg (W3YJ) and Geoff Wolf (AB3LS) will be at HackPittsburgh this Friday (4/21/11) to show off Xastir and APRSIS. These two application allow you to decode APRS traffic locally without the need for an internet connection. Xastir runs on Linux and APRSIS runs on Windows allowing everyone to be happy.

This event is free and open to the public. The doors will open at 7pm and we will get started shortly after.
