May 2017: Upcoming Classes and Events in May!

May is going to be a busy month for HackPittsburgh!

Intro to Oscilloscopes Class Description

This is a brand new interactive lecture/demonstration at HackPittsburgh on the fundamentals of oscilloscopes, what they are, how to use them, and various tips and tricks for getting started on your own project.

We will be using 4 different oscilloscopes. 1 of them analog, 1 of them digital but from the 80s, and 2 modern professional digital oscilloscopes.

Students will be able to play with the oscilloscopes, and try them out. Its not just a lecture, you will be able to learn by doing.

The lecture will be taught by an  Electrical Engineer who uses an oscilloscope, practically every single day, for his day job.

There will be some basic math involved, and maybe a tiny bit of algebra here and there, but nothing too fancy. Very basic stuff. No hand calculations of the Fourier Transform (Im sorry to disappoint).

The following topics will be covered

1: What is an Oscilloscope and how it can be your friend?

2: Analog vs Digital Scopes

3: What are signals, what is frequency, the fundamentals of digital signal processing

4: Sampling rate vs Data points vs Bandwidth

5: Using digital oscilloscopes to look at digital communication signals, UART, i2c, SPI.

6: Triggering digital communication signals

7: What kind of oscilloscope do you really need? How much money should you spend?

Learn to Solder Class Description

This class will teach you to solder or help you practice your skills if they are a little rusty. We will guide you through the process of building an Arduino from a kit. Kits will be provided and in the end you will go home with your brand new DIY Arduino ready to make your project dreams come true.

Recommended Age Group: 8-99 (kids must be accompanied by adults)
